Frans Horbach (Dutch, b. 1947) is an Amsterdam based artist who has exhibited in The Netherlands, France and the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Arts & Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Horbach’s father was a country physician who worked out of their family home, and his mother was a primary school teacher. After finishing secondary school, Horbach went to the port of Rotterdam and managed to get a job on a freighter bound for South America. He worked on different ships and visited places in Brazil, Argentine, Uruquay, as well as New York for the first time while working on the passenger liner 'Statendam'. Two years later Hornbach emigrated to America at 19 years old. He lived in Silicon Valley, south of San Francisco, working different odd jobs during the day and studying at night. Horbach traveled throughout Mexico and Peru, staying in Mexico to study art and cultural anthropology at the Universidad de las Americas. After returning to California, Horbach studied art and architecture at the University of California in Berkeley. He traveled to some of the Native American Indian reservations in the south-western states of America, including the Navajo, Hopi, Puebla and Zuni tribes in Arizona and New Mexico, continuing into Mexico, into the Sierra Madre mountains, the remote highlands of Nayarit, home of the Huichol Indians. After receiving graduating from Berkeley, he made a long journey to India, to the Himalayas, traveling overland through Turkey, Iran, Afganisthan, Pakistan and Nepal. These extensive travels have influenced Horbachs style, learning from experts, artisans, craftsmen, and citizens that he met along the way. He now lives and works in the Jordaan neighborhood in Amsterdam, and is married to Veronica Nahmias, a Romanian-born artist and children's book illustrator. - With Many a Sunlit ArrowLocated in Clayton, MOIn "With Many a Sunlit Arrow," color, line, shape, and texture collide on Kozuke ivory paper crafted from the fibers of the kozo plant. This one-of-a-kind, encaustic monotype illuminates a poetic interior landscape. The softness of the washi paper juxtaposed with the lush, textured encaustic/mixed media bring a sense of fragility and lightness to the artwork. Process: Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and gestural. She often works with a limited color palette of encaustic pigment and uses an iterative and spontaneous approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation sometimes include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and sentimental hand-written text from historical, contemporary, or autobiographical sources. Washi Paper: The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic. Shipping: The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message Alena directly to make arrangements. Matte and Frame Ideas: Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype; glass will "flatten" the monotype) Traditional frames with or without a matte When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors. For assistance and/or advice with framing and mounting the monotypes, please contact me directly. Signature and Certificate All artworks are signed on the back in pencil and include the title, creation year, and my signature. A certificate of authenticity is also included with the artwork. ++++ Alena Ahrens is a contemporary American-Asian artist. She studied performance art at MoMA...Category
