About the Item

Jasper Johns Jasper Johns Drawings (Hand signed and inscribed to Michael Crichton's brother), 1980-1981 Color offset Lithograph poster for Margo Leavin Gallery exhibition Signed, dated and dedicated in ink by Jasper Johns on the front Vintage metal frame included Jasper Johns’s first truly abstract artworks are his “Crosshatch” paintings and prints, which he developed from 1972 to 1983. These compositions feature hatched lines in various colors, though the term “Crosshatch” is a bit of a misnomer—Johns’s lines never cross over one another, but rather fit together like puzzle pieces. Johns found inspiration for this pattern on a passing car. “I only saw it for a second, but knew immediately that I was going to use it,” he remembered. “It had all the qualities that interest me—literalness, repetitiveness, an obsessive quality, order with dumbness, and the possibility of a complete lack of meaning.” This is a uniquely hand signed & inscribed, highly collectible vintage color lithographic poster, published on the occasion of the exhibition, "Jasper Johns Drawings 1970-80" at Margo Leavin Gallery. The print was bears the printed copyright in 1980, and Jasper Johns signed, dated and inscribed it in 1981. This work is hand signed and dedicated by the artist to the late Douglas Chrichton, the younger brother of famed author Michael Crichton, a longtime close friend and collaborator of Jasper Johns. Michael Crichton wrote a monograph on Jasper Johns and is known to have iconic works in his personal collection. The work bears a beautiful ink inscription and bold signature by Jasper Johns. Extremely rare and highly collectible when hand signed and inscribed - especially to someone with such a personal connection to the artist. Held in vintage metal frame Measurements: Image: 27 x 18 inches Framed: 30.5 x 22.5 inches About Douglas Crichton who was gifted this work: Douglas Crichton (1948–2012) was an author and a reporter for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, and went on to become a senior producer for the Financial News Network, the cable startup that is now CNBC. While away from Harvard on a soul-searching retreat, he wrote his first novel, Dealing or The Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues, with his brother, Michael Crichton. Throughout his multifaceted career, he read extensively and accumulated a vast library, edited many of his brother’s manuscripts, and delved into the research for books on such daunting topics as the Bill of Rights, English common law, and the history behind the politics of war. He is survived by his two sisters, Kimberly and Casey, and his wife of thirteen years, Debora. Very good vintage condition
