About the Publication:
Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design, an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age.
About the Artist:
Jean Helion (1904–1987) was a pioneering French painter, theorist, and intellectual whose evolution from geometric abstraction to poetic figuration established him as one of the most visionary and philosophically profound figures of 20th-century modernism. Born in Couterne, Normandy, Helion began his career as an architecture student before turning to painting in Paris, where he became a central figure in the avant-garde alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. A co-founder of the Abstraction-Creation group in 1931 with Auguste Herbin, Georges Vantongerloo, and Piet Mondrian, Helion was at the forefront of non-figurative art, creating luminous, precisely balanced abstractions that embodied a universal harmony of geometry and color. By the mid-1930s, he exhibited widely in Paris, London, and New York, forming close friendships with Calder and the American modernists and influencing the early development of Abstract Expressionism. Yet, by the late 1930s, Helion began a bold return to figuration, reintroducing recognizable forms into his work in pursuit of a new synthesis between structure and life, intellect and emotion. His postwar paintings of readers, walkers, and urban scenes retained the compositional clarity of abstraction while infusing it with human warmth and spiritual depth, reflecting his belief that “abstraction is the realism of the mind; figuration is the realism of the senses.” Captured during World War II and held as a prisoner of war, Helion’s experience deepened his art’s empathy and philosophical weight, leading to a mature style that celebrated everyday existence through lyrical composition and radiant color. His writings and correspondence revealed him as one of modernism’s most articulate thinkers, influencing generations of artists—among them Richard Diebenkorn, Ellsworth Kelly, Sean Scully, and Nicolas de Stael—who admired his union of formal discipline and emotional resonance. A bridge between the intellectual abstraction of prewar Europe and the expressive humanism of postwar art, Helion’s legacy endures in major museums worldwide, including MoMA, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Jean Helion remains a cornerstone of modern art—a painter-philosopher whose vision united geometry and grace, reason and soul. His highest auction record was achieved by New York II (1939), which sold for $1.76 million USD at Christie’s, New York, on May 12, 2021, reaffirming his enduring importance as one of the most innovative, influential, and collectible artists of the 20th century.

Jean Hélion
Jean Hélion, pseudonym of Jean Bichier, is a French painter and engraver, born April 21, 1904 in Couterne and died October 27, 1987 in Paris. His complex artistic itinerary passed, a rare case, from abstract art sometimes close to Piet Mondrian1 to figurative art. He helped introduce abstract art to the United States. Jean Hélion has always been able to express in his works his youthful spirit through the vivacity of the colors and the rhythm of his compositions. Hailed in the 1960s by the new generation of painters, that of Gilles Aillaud or Eduardo Arroyo, he is today considered the precursor of the New German Fauves of the 1970s and the figurative ones of the 1980s. above all his work of the 1930s and 1950s.
