About the Item
CORAL 3 is an original hand drawn lithograph created in 1979 by the NY woman artist, Joan Melnick. Inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs with their exotic forms and vibrant colors, CORAL 3 is a colorful nature abstract printed in rich shades of deep blue, vibrant yellow, pink, aqua blue, greens, and black depicting a close-up view of coral reef flora. Joan Melnick's travels to Mexico led her to discover the tranquility and unique sensual mystery of a world beneath the sea.

Joan Melnick was born 1942 in New York and began painting at an early age. She studied Interior Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and then went on to study printmaking and painting at New Paltz State University, where she received her Masters in Art. Upon the completion of her studies and several student exhibitions she moved to Manhattan to begin her professional career as a painter. During the sixties Joan taught art in various school programs and began exhibiting her etchings in and around New York. Living and working in New York City had a very strong influence on Joan's paintings. The clarity of color became much stronger and the image much larger, as well as more simplistic. Joan Melnick is considered a colorist, extraordinarily sensitive to the expressive and evocative roles that color plays in art and nature. Usually subtle and fragile, sometimes direct and bold, she handles her transitions from light to shadow with absolute precision. She controls the delicate balance of color, light, and form in a painterly parallel to organic growth.

Color lithograph, Edition 20.
The artist describes this project:
“Human activity is causing the mass extinction of plant and animal species at an alarming rate. I paint carefully rendered, miniature portraits of endangered animals into larger compositions to raise questions about Earth’s biodiversity crisis and the place of wildlife within increasingly unstable habitats. The swirling and exploding shapes and colors represent how our progressively chaotic environment is displacing fauna and the systems that support it.
This lithograph includes an image of Colorado’s state bird, the lark...
