About the Item
This work is a collaboration between two artists, Joe Doyle and Diane Rosenblum. The surface of the canvas is completely flat but a remarkable three dimensional illusion is created.
Joe Doyle established himself as a painter during the movement toward new abstraction in the mid-seventies. By the late 70’s Doyle had attained national prominence working in the style referred to as Abstract Illusionism. Doyle's art was included in 'Reality of Illusion' a large touring exhibition organized by the University of Southern California and The Denver Art Museum. With the digital age approaching, Doyle changed his direction and became a master at using that technology to create fascinating works in which he uses digital mapping and his extensive knowledge of formal painting to create a super slick image. He decides on the modeling of the surfaces, the direction of the light, the cast that the shadow will make among many other factors. Joe Doyle passed away last year and this is one of his last collaborations with the artist Diane Rosenblum.
Diane Rosenblum graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Studio Art, and from Brooks Institute with a M.S. in Photography. The art she creates on her own encompasses photography, drawing, painting and digital printmaking, and is held in the permanent collections of almost twenty museums, including SFMOMA, the LA County Museum of Art, and the Oakland Museum.
Rosenblum and Doyle began collaborating about 10 years ago. Shortly after that, they began a new project melding hard edge abstraction with 3D computer modeling.
This work is created using archival pigmented inks on canvas and measures 38x50" it is signed and numbered 1 / 7 on the verso of the canvas.

By James Havard
Located in Southampton, NY
In order to make room at the gallery for new work coming in August for the Summer Season here in the Hamptons, certain work is offered at a substantial price reduction. This is one of those works. Originally priced at $8000, we are now offering it at only $3950.
James Havard is considered one of the "pioneers of the abstract illusionism movement" One of James Havard's homes and studio's was on the island of Tortola and this work from 1979 evokes the feel of the aqua blue waters and the reference of Salt Island in the painting refers to the salty feel of the ocean waters.
In the 1970's Havard was the principle artist that started working in an abstract style that included gestural brush strokes and paint squeezed directly from the tube to create beautiful surface textures in his paintings. He then painted shadows to certain areas of paint to create the 3d illusion of depth to his paintings. This created the "Abstract Illusion" movement of the 1970's. Havard had many museum exhibitions and his paintings were sort after and exhibited at galleries around the world. Havard along with other artists like, Michael Gallagher, George Green...
