About the Item

This illusionistic work on canvas titled "Busta" is a collaboration between two artists, Joe Doyle and Diane Rosenblum. The surface of the canvas is completely flat but a remarkable three dimensional illusion is created. Joe Doyle established himself as a painter during the movement toward new abstraction in the mid-seventies. By the late 70’s Doyle had attained national prominence working in the style referred to as Abstract Illusionism. Doyle and others were included in 'Reality of Illusion' a large touring exhibition of primarily American illusionist artists organized by the University of Southern California and The Denver Art Museum. With the digital age approaching, Doyle changed his direction and became a master at using that technology to create fascinating works in which he uses digital mapping and his extensive knowledge of formal painting to create a super slick image. He decides on the modeling of the surfaces, the direction of the light, the cast that the shadow will make among many other factors. Diane Rosenblum graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Studio Art, and from Brooks Institute with a M.S. in Photography. The art she creates on her own encompasses photography, drawing, painting and digital printmaking, and is held in the permanent collections of almost twenty museums, including SFMOMA, the LA County Museum of Art, and the Oakland Museum. Rosenblum and Doyle began collaborating about 10 years ago and then soon began a new project melding hard edge abstraction with 3D computer modeling. This new work pushes the aesthetics of painting into new territory, reflecting a culture increasingly permeated with and reliant upon computers and a digital mindset. This illusionistic work is created using archival pigmented inks on canvas and measures 38x50" it is signed and numbered 1 / 7 on the verso of the canvas.
