About the Item
16 Green Circles from the Eight Variants series, 1970
This work is number 51 from the edition of 165 printed by Hans Mayer, Krefeld, Germany.
screenprint 28"x28"
Julian Stanczak American/Polish, 1928-2017. explores the visual, psychological, and emotional resonance of color in his Op art paintings, through which he aims to induce a “color meltdown,” as he describes: “I want to fuse many colorants and their gradations into a single color experience.” Influenced by Josef Albers and Russian Suprematism and Constructivism, Stanczak creates abstract compositions full of vibrating colors and optical illusion. Shapes pulsate, colors glow, and vertical lines shuffle and dance across his intensely energetic canvases.

Julian Stanczak
Julian Stanczak was born in Borownica, Poland in 1928. At the beginning of World War II, Stanczak was forced into a Siberian labor camp, where he permanently lost the use of his right arm. He had been right-handed. In 1942, aged thirteen, Stanczak escaped from Siberia to join the Anders' Army in Persia. After deserting from the army, he spent his teenage years in a hut in a Polish refugee camp in Uganda. In Africa, Stanczak learned to write and paint left-handed. He then spent some years in London, before moving to the United States in 1950. He settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He became a United States citizen in 1957, taught at the Cincinnati Academy of Art for 7 years. The Op Art movement was named after his first major show, Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings, held at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1964. His work was included in the Museum of Modern Art's 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye. In 1966 he was named a "New Talent" by Art in America magazine. In the early 1960s he began to make the surface plane of the painting vibrate through his use of wavy lines and contrasting colors in works such as Provocative Current (1965). These paintings gave way to more complex compositions constructed with geometric rigidity yet softened with varying degrees of color transparency such as Netted Green (1972). In addition to being an artist, Stanczak was also a teacher, having worked at the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1957–64 and as Professor of Painting, at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 1964-1995. He was named "Outstanding American Educator" by the Educators of America in 1970. (Wikipedia)

Artist Statment:
On the surface, these images do not represent anything. They’re compilations of color patches and lines. However, the forms that these two basic components take, create new entities and a variety of paths for interpretation. A patch is the pure color of the background. It’s a vibrating color, living its own, intense life. It’s also a background for the line drawing. In my painting, I decided to treat these two elements as one. The lines are as intense in color as the patches. The line is no longer just a drawing; it’s an equal component of the painting, it creates the painting with its color. While painting, I always kept the same order of applying the paint, so that the line evenly covers the patch, and, observed from a sufficient distance, becomes a patch itself. This creates a kind of optical illusion. Our site has to adapt to drizzle, to a peculiar noise caused by the equivalent of all the elements of the painting whose planes permeate. This mutual permeation enlivens the elements of the painting which seem to vibrate, become liquid and lively. And it was this effect of liquidity that inspired me. I was wondering how to convey the movement of not only water but of everything that lives and grows, of everything that is natural. I decided that multiplication, repeatability of the theme, and the equal character of these features will be the common features that to a great extent will present my interests. The „Noise” series is strictly inspired by nature. One could say that the series represents nature, but it’s a representation so deeply reduced that the true forms of real things disperse and blur, revealing their true meaning.”
