About the Item

Artist: (after) Lee Krasner (American, 1908-1984) Title: "Lee Krasner: A Retrospective - The Museum of Modern Art (Celebration)" *Signed and dated in the plate (printed signature) lower right Year: 1984 Medium: Original Offset-Lithograph, Exhibition Poster on smooth wove paper Limited edition: Unknown Printer: Unknown, likely New York, NY Publisher: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY Sheet size: 24.07" x 36" Image size: 17.07" x 34.07" Condition: Some minor handling creases and a few tiny surface marks. In excellent condition with strong colors Extremely rare A spectacular original scarce poster from Krasner's first full museum retrospective Notes: Provenance: private collection - London, England; acquired in New York, NY in the late 1980's. Poster produced for a very special exhibition of Krasner's work "Lee Krasner: A Retrospective" at The Museum of Modern Art, New York from December 22, 1984 - February 12, 1985. The image featured on this poster is Krasner's 1960, 92.25" x 184.5", oil on canvas painting "Celebration", (Lee Krasner: A Catalogue Raisonné - Landau No. 353, page 187-188), which is now within the permanent collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH. Poster design by John Eric Cheim. "Celebration", 1960 was formerly titled "Upstream #2" in 1957. This exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY was Krasner's first full museum retrospective. "Because of its large size and decorative accents of salmon, red, and green, this work appears anomalous in juxtaposition with the other paintings in the first Wise Gallery show, which were mostly umber, white, and cream. By 1960, Krasner was working, for the most part, in a monochromatic palette; however, this is actually a reworked canvas of several years earlier in which the original colors were only partly painted out." - Landau page 187 GIA Gallery Poster Disclaimer: Not to be confused with thousands of contemporary inkjet/giclée/digital reproductions ignorantly or deliberately passed off as originals on the market today. The examples we offer here are the original period vintage (exhibition) posters, created and designed by, or under the supervision and authorization of the artist or their respective estate (posthumously), for various exhibitions and events in which they participated. If applicable, this poster is also fully documented within its respective artists' official catalogue raisonné of authentic graphic works, prints, and or posters. Biography: Lenore "Lee" Krasner (born Lena Krassner on October 27, 1908 - June 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong specialty in collage, who was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner’s training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock’s more intuitive and unstructured output. Krasner is now seen as a key transitional figure within abstraction, who connected early-20th-century art with the new ideas of postwar America, and her work fetches high prices at auction. She is also one of the few female artists to have had a retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art.

His colorful paintings have attracted critical admiration and a popular following. Common subjects include nude women and cats, birds and other animals. His early works were influenced by the CoBrA group, a European art movement known for its use of expressive, childlike imagery. In the 1960s, Ting moved to New York City and became associated with the Pop Art movement. Ting is perhaps best known for his series of paintings featuring women, which he called "Cat Women...
