About the Item

This exquisite lithograph after Lucio Fontana (1899–1968), titled Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept), from the album San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), originates from the 1975 edition published by XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, October 1975. Concetto Spaziale embodies Fontana’s revolutionary vision of space and matter, transforming the pictorial surface into a dimensional field of energy and contemplation. The work reflects the artist’s lifelong fascination with the void, gesture, and cosmic infinity, distilled here into pure spatial abstraction. Executed as a lithograph on velin d'Arches paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris, whose collaborations with leading modernists such as Picasso, Braque, Miro, and Chagall defined the golden age of 20th-century printmaking. About the Publication: San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), published in 1975 by XXe siecle, Paris, is a monumental postwar portfolio uniting the greatest names in modern art in homage to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, the visionary founder of the renowned art journal XXe Siecle. Printed by the foremost ateliers of Europe, including Mourlot, Arte, Bellini, and Curwen, the album features original lithographs by Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Braque, Calder, Magritte, Fontana, Moore, and others, each representing a master’s tribute to the spirit of artistic innovation and unity that defined 20th-century modernism. About the Artist: Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) was an Argentine-Italian artist, sculptor, and visionary innovator whose radical approach to space, form, and material permanently transformed modern art. Revered as the founder of Spatialism (Spazialismo), Fontana shattered the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture by cutting, piercing, and puncturing the canvas to reveal the infinite void beyond, transforming the two-dimensional surface into a living, multidimensional field. Born in Rosario, Argentina, and trained in both Buenos Aires and Milan, Fontana combined the discipline of sculpture with the conceptual daring of the European avant-garde. He was deeply influenced by and in dialogue with artistic giants such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, redefined the very essence of art. From Picasso, Fontana learned the expressive possibilities of form; from Kandinsky, the spiritual power of abstraction; from Duchamp, the notion of art as idea; and from Calder and Miro, the poetry of movement and space. His groundbreaking Concetti Spaziali (“Spatial Concepts”)—the famous slashed (Tagli) and punctured (Buchi) monochrome canvases—were not acts of destruction but meditations on creation, offering glimpses into the infinite through the simplest of gestures. These works reflected Fontana’s fascination with postwar scientific discovery, space exploration, and the metaphysical dimensions of existence, marking a profound shift from representation to revelation. His exploration of light, movement, and technology in his Spatial Environments (Ambienti spaziali) anticipated Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and the immersive installations of later decades. Throughout his career, Fontana sought to unify matter and energy, body and cosmos, gesture and idea—his art functioning as both object and experience, simultaneously physical and metaphysical. His influence on later generations of artists was monumental, inspiring Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Anish Kapoor, James Turrell, and Damien Hirst, among others, and his philosophy of spatial art continues to shape contemporary discourse on perception and the void. Exhibited at major institutions worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Fontana remains one of the defining figures of postwar art. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Lucio Fontana endures as a master of modern abstraction—a visionary who opened the canvas to the cosmos and transformed art into an exploration of infinite space. His highest auction record was achieved by Concetto spaziale, La fine di Dio (1964), which sold for $29.2 million USD at Christie’s, New York, on November 7, 2015, reaffirming Fontana’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential, revolutionary, and collectible artists of the 20th century.
