Lucio Fontana (Rosario, February 19, 1899 - Comabbio, September 7, 1968) was an Italian-born Argentine painter, ceramist and sculptor.
Of an Italian family, but Argentine by birth, in Milan he attended the Brera Academy dedicating himself to sculpture; back in Buenos Aires he drafted the Manifiesto blanco with which he laid the foundations of the spatialist movement. In the early 50s he made canvases with holes which were followed by the famous "cuts". In his artistic creations he used numerous techniques, both in painting and in sculpture and in ceramics.
«In the folds of the debate that divides post-war Italian art, between Togliatti's calls for order, supported by the figurative neorealism of Renato Guttuso, and conceptual provocations (Piero Manzoni who boxes and numbers the Artist's Shit), an artist stands out aiming at a pure, airy, absolute image. Already at the Venice Biennale in 1949 Fontana attracted the perplexity of the critics and the mockery of the public with the perforated canvases that he called Spatial Concepts ».
