About the Item
Knots in Green: Monotype on archival paper Size: 20 x 20 by South American/Venezuelan artist Luisa Duarte is an example of geometric abstract art . Luisa Duarte works out of her studio in Houston, Texas. Price is unframed. Price for frame can be quoted and turn around from wholesale frame is approximately 3 weeks or less.
Luisa Duarte’s works has a strong connection with her Latin American roots, with special focus in the geometrical abstract movement, a movement adopted by Latin America during the late 50’s. It was very prominent in Venezuela. Probably the most prominent collection of geometric abstract art was given to MOMA by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros who now resides in the USA.
Her works are focused on explorations of shapes, lines , color and also on memories of her childhood in a promising country. Those memories are transformed into dynamic works invoking good energies to bring back what we have lost.
In these complex geometrical systems, objects intersect, merge and collide, producing negative spaces that call the viewer to attention. In some cases, the almost imperceptibly off-kilter placement of geometrical elements within a composition speaks to her emphasis on relationships - the objects always exist in relationship to each other.
There is a constant interest in constructing and deconstructing, and the consideration of endless juxtapositions.
There are other works by Luisa Duarte available on 1stdibs and can be found by searching her name.

Duarte is a Venezuelan-American artist based in Houston. She has been exhibited around the world, including at the Holocaust Museum in Houston, the 2017 Texas Biennial in Austin and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia, Maczul in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Duarte is known nationally for her distinctive monotypes and colorful paintings, characterized by sharp-edged geometric shapes that allude to her background in architecture. Her work focuses on themes of identity, fragility and the boundaries between personal and public. “I am working on a collage made of monotypes on paper,” Durate shares. “It is a collection of fragments, a fictional territory, where the hard stone texture seemed to be captured or trapped by the paper. It also has a structure made of monotypes as well, hovering over the surface, indicating a road to be traveled. “This work will be part of an ongoing series talking about territoriality, fragility and borders that I have been working on since 2018. For me, the concept of territoriality encompasses not only the physical aspect of the space, but the emotional part as well. These territories that I create are spaces that work as refuge and solace.
“They are a means to break away from chaos. They become repositories of longings, tributes and secrets.”

Untitled: Yellow, Green and Black Lithograph

Marjorie Shaw Kubach (American), "Untitled: Yellow, Green & Black Lithograph, Abstract Lithograph signed in Pencil, 26 x 19, Late 20th Century
Colors: Yellow, Green, Black
Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. As noted in the New York Times by Vivian Reynor, Allen Kubach “specializes in strong colors, expressing them in vertical and diagonal grids laid one on top of another.” In such a manner, Allan reflects these contemporary ideals that were taking New York by storm in the 1960’s and 70’s. The linear focus and non objective use of color found in Allen’s work correlates to that of the pioneers of abstract and minimalistic work such as Sol Le Witt...
