From the book Entretat: "Manfred Schwartz worked in both the United States and Europe. On the advice of Henri Matisse, he traveled in 1950 to Etretat, a village on the Norman seacoast of France. From that trip, and a subsequent visit in 1960, derives one of the most significant projects of 20th-century art. Etretat had already imposed itself on the work of such masters as Corot, Courbet, Monet, Matisse, and Braque. Schwartz, too, came away with a totally new approach to painting. All his recent work has been concerned with capturing the shimmering light and color of the pebbled beach at Etretat...These works, quite unique in contemporary art, combine the subtle, pulsating beauty of Monet's 'Waterlilies' series with the dynamic excitement of Jackson Pollock's Abstract Expressionism. John Canaday, the art critic of The New York Times, say of them: 'Manfred Schwartz enters dubious battle and comes through with a decisive victory.' Schwartz's text, describing his experiences at Etretat and the work that has resulted, is a delightful testament to the individuality of the artist's vision. The chapters on Structural Development, Color Development, and Subject Matter, provide an uncommon insight into the mind of an extraordinarily gifted painter.
