About the Item
Layering fabrics, dyes, pigments, crystals, and various other natural materials, Martha Tuttle is a master of juxtaposing textures to explore the relationship between humans and the physical world. Her unique artworks draw upon a variety of mediums to create harmonious compositions vibrating with her artistic energy. Tuttle’s new triptych of prints — "The Colors of a Cholla Cactus After Rain in the Late Summer or Early Fall" — amazingly capture the same diversity in material and tactility with ink and paper.
Tuttle achieved this wizardry by using multiple techniques in the printmaking process. While thinking about her project, the artist found metal plates in the wild that had been exposed to = California desert elements. To make her prints, Tuttle took these treasures back to the studio and incorporated parts of handwoven textiles printed both directly and in relief, as well as shaped woodblocks. Inspired by the landscape, the chosen colors viscerally transport the viewer to the climate of Tuttle’s hometown (Santa Fe, NM) with the materials of the prints’ origin in the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness (California). Staying true to her artistic practice, the series of works on paper recruit natural materials in the mark-making process to truly reflect the physical world in her meditative, spiritual examinations of artistic form.

Artist Biography:
Eugene Larkin was born into a farming family of seven children in rural Minnesota in 1921. The landscape and rhythms of agricultural life were a strong early influence, as was the artistic example of his painter mother, Martha.
Larkin attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with an M.A. in 1947. As a student of the art historian Lawrence Schmeckebier, an authority on the art of the Mexican muralists, he was soon introduced to the expressionism and political engagement of German and Mexican artists of the 1920s and 30s. An early cycle of prints and drawings on the life of labor activist Joe Hill...
