Martin Engelman
Double Sided Abstract Expressionist Monotypes on Handmade Paper.

About the Item

A double sided work of two abstract expressionist monotypes on hand-made paper from an original work by Martin Engelman. The paper has one monotype to each side. See photos. The works are not signed. Two monotypes on one piece of hand-made paper. Both abstract expressionist in style, one, highly colourful in strong primary colours and clearly delineated whilst the other displaying more sombre and moody, dreamy tones. Martin Engelman was born in Holland in 1924. Studied at the School of Graphic Arts in Amsterdam and at the School of Applied Arts in Maastricht. During the war, he joined the Dutch Navy in England. In 1947, Engelman settled in Paris. He became Cassandre's assistant and worked at the same time creating typefaces for Deberny and Peignot. In 1954, he left Paris for Milan where he worked as a "designer" for three years. In 1957, back in Paris, he collaborated with Darthea Speyer who directed the exhibitions of the American Cultural Center. At the same time, he made the decision to devote himself to painting, and it was in Paris, in 1960, that he had his first personal exhibition. In 1964, he was invited to Kassel to participate in Documenta III, then the Stedelijk Museum devoted an exhibition to him in 1965. He then went to the United States. He stayed and painted in New York for a few months before embarking on a long trip to Mexico. At the end of 1967, Martin Engelman was invited by the Hamburg Academy where he taught for six months. In 1968, he received the 1st Graphic Arts Prize at the International Festival of Holland. In 1969 he obtained the D.A.A.D. in Berlin. In 1970, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Martin Engelman died in 1992. A monotype is a unique print, typically painterly in effect, made by applying paint or printing ink to a flat sheet of metal, glass, or plastic. The painted image is transferred to paper either by manually rubbing or using a press.

  • The Tree of Life, Signed Artists Copy
    By Yasse Tabuchi
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Artist's copy (Epreuve d'Artiste) of a large lithograph of a tree in colours by Yasse Tabuchi, hand signed and dated to the bottom right and dedicated to the bottom left. Yasse Tabuchi was born in 1921 in Kitakyûshû in the south of Japan. He first became acquainted with the techniques of oil painting in primary school. Here, he was also introduced to methods of copper engraving. During World War II, at only 17 years of age, he was called for military service in the Japanese army. In 1948, he returned to the University of Tokyo and completed his studies in Art History with a dissertation about French Colourism from Delacroix to Bonnard. He experienced a world of inspiration in non-fiction books, particularly in those concerning The Impressionists and Pre-Raphaelites. Tabuchi continuously searched for a more dualistic access to art, which is both technical and intellectual. In 1951, Tabuchi traveled to Paris in order to study at the Sorbonne. In 1953 he made his artistic debut at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles showing four oil works on canvas. He soon built up a reputation in the Post-War art world with his abstract works in vivid colours. During this time, he socialised with many other Japanese artists, as well as some of the members of the CoBrA group. Tabuchi soon shifted from the figurative style of his earlier Parisian works to an increasing level of abstraction. Influenced by Surrealist painting, his works were characterised by organic symbols, reflecting his ideas about the universe. After 1955 he began to experiment with colours and his palette became darker influenced by the difficulties he was experiencing at the time. In 1958, Tabuchi was invited to take part in an exhibition about Japanese abstract paintings, arranged by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. At the beginning of the 1960s, he went on a world tour to India and Japan, where he became fascinated by the glimmering golden shades of the Orient, especially prevalent in sacred temples. Tabuchi’s fascination with the colour gold became an important element in his later works and is used as a symbol of universal divinity. The figuration is divided in different sections, inspired by Japanese painted screens...
