Mary Judge
Rose Window 53, Large, Botanical Mandala Relief Print, Dark Grey on Red Paper

2006

About the Item

In this large, square relief print on handmade paper, a circular, botanical mandala shape with petal-like edges in dark grey is dramatic and eye-catching against the brilliant red background. A circle surrounded by smaller petal shapes is at the very center of the symmetrical composition, while tiny ordered lines reach outward from the center. Signed, dated and marked for orientation on verso. Framed in a light, natural wood float frame. 48 x 48 inches (unframed), 54 x 54 inches (framed). This work is from the Rose Windows series of relief prints of component parts inked separately and printed on Wildwood's handmade paper. Variations in transparency happen with multiple overprinting or when thicker or thinner paper is employed. The plates are generated from handmade drawings and laser-cut. All prints are unique yet part of a series. Thematically, the artist works with the flower form of medieval rose windows. The artist is interested in the use of a modular unit transformed through repetition and layering of hard edge forms. Mary Judge is an artist in love with Italian art and traditional Italian art making techniques. Through her extensive knowledge of both Judge taps these traditions to craft and make contemporary her own personal artistic language.
