Michael Rothenstein (1908-1993) Painter of figurative and abstract subjects in oils, water colours, collage and mixed media; maker of assemblages, printmaker and writer on art.
In 1946, after an early career as a landscape water colourist, Michael Rothenstein embarked upon his career as a printmaker. He was dedicated to the art of printmaking from this moment onwards and explored working with lithographs, monotypes, etchings, linocuts, woodcuts, screen prints and mixed media In 1957 he worked with Hayter at Atelier 17. From this time onwards printmaking became his main field of activity and a prolific output of colour linocuts, woodcuts. Screen prints and mixed media prints followed over the next four decades. His major contribution to printmaking was the development of the relief print using found objects and materials, a subject on which he wrote three books
Michael Rothenstein (1908–1993) was a pioneering British printmaker whose work significantly expanded the possibilities of printmaking in the 20th century. Known for his innovative techniques and experimental approach, Rothenstein explored linocut, woodcut, screenprint, and particularly relief printing, often incorporating found objects and unconventional materials. His prints are celebrated for their dynamic compositions, bold colours, and abstracted forms that bridge figuration and abstraction. He was deeply inspired by the rural English landscape, which features prominently in many of his works. As a teacher and advocate for printmaking, Rothenstein played a key role in revitalizing the medium in post-war Britain, especially through his work at the Curwen Studio and the founding of the Printmakers Council. His prints remain influential for their expressive freedom and technical daring.

Jimmy Ernst
Plate II - 1970
Print - Screen Print on Heavy Paper 28'' x 37'' inches
Edition: Signed in pencil and numbered 24/125
Jimmy Ernst’s artwork was influenced by a number of powerful talents and vital currents in the art of his time. Son of Max Ernst, Jimmy drew upon the biomorphic and surreal compositions of his father, as well as Arp, Klee, André Breton, and Lyonel Feininger. His mature oil paintings, which emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, reflect the Atomic Age aesthetic of the period. Often, they resemble crystals or webs; many look like vast labyrinths and are interpreted as symbols of the unconscious mind.
Ernst was always interested in spirituality and drew inspiration from indigenous American art...

Invisible Flying object - 1977
Print - Lithograph on Arches Archival Paper 25.75'' x 19.5''
Edition: Signed in pencil and marked 10/100
After completing his studies at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1947, Pierre Alechinsky immediately became one of the founders and most active members of the CoBrA group . He began working with other members 'four-handed', especially with Appel and Dotremont, producing oil paintings filled with a multitude of small figures; his taste for ironical titles and curved lines was already becoming evident.
After Cobra disbanded, Alechinsky moved to Paris where he studied printmaking and moved in Surrealist circles. His work contains residual figurative motifs, such as goblins, reptiles of every description, volcanoes, and rushing streams. The beasts and geographical elements arouse disquiet as well as smiles of complicity.
