About the Item

Nazanin Moghbeli is a Persian American artist with training in Persian calligraphy, miniature painting, and music. The abstracted calligraphy text in her "Words from My Mother" series is written in the hand of Nazanin's mother, Manzar Moghbeli. Nazanin borrows her mother's her words -- written in text in Farsi calligraphy -- and works on top, or into, or next to her writing with her own abstracted ink paintings. The finished works are made by a photogravure process, whereby the image of each drawing is transferred onto a print-plate, and then the plates are inked and printed in the printing lab of Master Printmaker Cindi Ettinger. Nazanin weaves in plates of her mother’s work with her own, creating layers, sometimes visibly collaged, into which she draws/erases further in response to the image. In these personal dialogues on paper, Nazanin explore the tensions that create so many rich layers in a mother daughter relationship. Nazanin Moghbeli grew up during the turbulent years of the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. In her art, she grapples with her dual identities as an Iranian and American to shed light on what happens when that which seems disparate comes together. The simultaneous contradictory presence of violence and beauty, conflict and harmony, bloodshed and community are central to her work.
