About the Publication:
Derriere le Miroir (translated as "Behind the Mirror") was an iconic French art periodical published from 1946 to 1982 by Maeght Editeur, one of the most influential art publishers of the 20th century. Founded by Aime Maeght in Paris, the publication was conceived as a visual and literary collaboration between leading modern artists, poets, and critics. Each issue functioned as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in itself—featuring original lithographs printed directly from the artists stones or plates, alongside essays, poems, and critical commentary. Over the course of 36 years, Derriere le Miroir produced more than 250 issues and showcased an extraordinary roster of artists including Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, Pierre Bonnard, Alberto Giacometti, Eduardo Chillida, Ellsworth Kelly, Francis Bacon, Paul Rebeyrolle, Claude Garache, Antoni Tapies, Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Pol Bury, Shusaku Arakawa, and Gerard Titus-Carmel. Printed in the ateliers of Mourlot, Arte, and Imprimerie Moderne du Lion, the periodical set new standards for quality in color lithography, combining fine art printing with elegant typography and poetic text. Beyond its visual brilliance, Derriere le Miroir also became a cultural chronicle of postwar European modernism. Each issue coincided with exhibitions held at Galerie Maeght, providing a collectible and widely accessible record of groundbreaking shows. Its integration of image, text, and philosophy created a dialogue between art and literature that elevated the modern art book to new aesthetic heights. Today, Derriere le Miroir remains one of the most sought-after and historically significant art publications, prized by collectors and scholars alike for its craftsmanship, influence, and its role in defining the visual language of 20th-century modernism. The Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence continues to honor this legacy through exhibitions and archival preservation of the series, affirming Derriere le Miroirs enduring place in the history of modern art and fine art publishing.
About the Artist:
Pablo Palazuelo (1915–2007) was a Spanish painter and sculptor celebrated for his refined geometric abstraction that fuses mathematics, philosophy, and spirituality into a harmonious visual language. Initially trained in architecture, Palazuelo turned to painting in the 1940s, developing a distinctive style rooted in rhythmic line, spatial balance, and a deep exploration of form and transformation. His work bridges the poetic rigor of geometry with the fluidity of organic growth, creating compositions that appear both constructed and alive. Deeply connected to the evolution of 20th century modernism, Palazuelos art reflects the influence of pioneers such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, sought to unite abstraction with intellectual and emotional depth. Over his long career, he exhibited internationally and received major honors including Spains National Award for Plastic Arts. His works are represented in prestigious institutions such as the Museo Reina Sofia, the Guggenheim, and the Centre Pompidou, and remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide. The highest price ever paid for a Pablo Palazuelo artwork is approximately 1.38 million USD, achieved in 2021 at Sothebys London for Sombra Diafana (1952).

Pablo Palazuelo
Pablo Palazuelo was one of the most significant Spanish abstract artists of the 20th century. He originally studied architecture at the University of Oxford but soon turned to visual arts. His work focused deeply on geometry, transformation, and the spiritual dimension of form. In 1948, he received a grant from the French Institute and moved to Paris, where he engaged with avant-garde circles and became influenced by geometric abstraction, Eastern philosophy, and alchemy. Style and Work: Early influences include Paul Klee and Bauhaus theory.
In the 1950s, he developed what he called “geometric transformations”, using abstract forms to explore metaphysical ideas.
From 1969 onward, he expanded into sculpture, giving three-dimensional form to his visual language.
He also created prints and worked on artist’s books. Awards and Recognition: Kandinsky Prize (1952)
Spain’s National Prize for Plastic Arts (1999)
Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts (2004) Legacy: Palazuelo's work is held in major institutions such as the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), MACBA (Barcelona), and numerous international collections. He is celebrated for blending science, mysticism, and art through his unique abstract language.
