About the Item

This exquisite heliogravure after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled 7.1.58. II, originates from the rare 1972 folio Pablo Picasso, La Chute d'Icare (The Fall of Icarus), Decoration du Foyer des Delegues Palais de l'UNESCO a Paris, Suite d'etudes preparatoires en noir et en couleurs realisees du 6 Decembre 1957 au 29 Janvier 1958. Published by Editions d'art Albert Skira, Geneve, under the direction of Albert Skira, Editeur, Geneve, and printed by Atar Roto Presse S.A., Geneve, this edition presents a series of preparatory studies—both monochrome and color—created by Picasso for his monumental mural commissioned for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This composition, dated January 7, 1958, captures the artist’s continued exploration of rhythm and abstraction, revealing the evolution of form, energy, and balance that informed the final La Chute d’Icare (The Fall of Icarus) mural. Executed on velin paper, this heliogravure measures 11.4 x 15.4 inches (28.96 x 39.12 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1972 publication format. This edition, produced under Albert Skira's supervision, preserves the tonal clarity, gestural freedom, and compositional vitality of Picasso’s original 1958 studies for one of his most significant public murals. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art in the 20th century. Born in Malaga, Spain, he demonstrated prodigious talent from an early age and trained in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Paris, where he became the epicenter of avant-garde innovation. Picasso pioneered Cubism alongside Georges Braque, explored emotional depth through his Blue and Rose periods, and continually reinvented his style across thousands of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. His influence spans movements from Surrealism to abstraction, and his work remains central to global art history. The highest price ever paid for one of his artworks is approximately US $179.4 million for Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) (1955). Pablo Picasso heliogravure, 7.1.58.
