About the Item

This exquisite collotype after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled from the portfolio Picasso, Carnet de la Californie, originates from the rare 1959 folio published by Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris. Printed by l'atelier de Georges Duval, Paris, under the direction of Charles Feld, this work forms part of the artist’s celebrated “California notebook,” a vibrant visual diary capturing his years in Cannes following his move to the villa La Californie. Executed during a period of intense creativity, the series reflects Picasso’s fascination with light, space, and the playful vitality of domestic and studio life. These lyrical compositions, reproduced with exceptional fidelity through the collotype process, reveal Picasso’s mastery of line, gesture, and spontaneity. Executed on velin d’Arches paper, this collotype measures 10.375 x 16.5 inches (26.35 x 41.91 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1959 publication format. This edition, printed in the fourth quarter of 1959, preserves the tonal precision, texture, and immediacy of Picasso’s original drawings from his Carnet de la Californie, one of his most expressive postwar graphic cycles. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art in the 20th century. Born in Malaga, Spain, he demonstrated prodigious talent from an early age and trained in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Paris, where he became the epicenter of avant-garde innovation. Picasso pioneered Cubism alongside Georges Braque, explored emotional depth through his Blue and Rose periods, and continually reinvented his style across thousands of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. His influence spans movements from Surrealism to abstraction, and his work remains central to global art history. The highest price ever paid for one of his artworks is approximately US $179.4 million for Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) (1955).
