Soulages is a French Painter, engraver, lithographer, and designer. He arrived in Paris in 1938 with the intent to study painting, but he decided no to enter the École des Beaux-Arts after seeing exhibitions of Cézanne’s and Picasso’s work. After meeting Sonia Delaunay, he became interested in abstract art and eventually settled in the French capital in 1946. There, he resumed painting and made his first nonfigurative works in 1947 with black signs in heavy brushstrokes on a light background. He still lives in Paris and exhibits regularly.

Arches Paper with Mourlot watermark - Excellent condition A
Le Corbusier’s relationship with Mourlot started as early as the mid thirties. The artist was always interested in editions of all sorts, whether furniture, tablewear or lithographic. It all related to a new modern way of life and intrinsic to his architecture. In fact, the famous Modulor is the iconic image in Le Corbusier’s work as it is the basis for his architectural work.
As in many other cases, the Master’s philosophy was very democratic and he felt that while a few proofs should be signed, the others should be signed directly in the plate so that it could be affordable to as many people as possible. He wanted not only collectors, but regular home owners to have access to an artwork of quality but reasonably priced, just as he wanted them to afford his furniture designs. It was all about Modernity ushering a brave new world.

About the Artist:
José Luis Cuevas is a Mexican artist who worked primarily with etchings, illustrations, sculptures, and paintings, though he is perhaps best known for his drawings. According to Cuevas, “perhaps because I was born in a paper mill and pencil factory, paper has always had a great fascination for me.” He briefly attended the eminent Mexican institution Escuela de Pintura, however Cuevas considers himself a self-taught draughtsman in search of an alternative to the Mexican Muralists and their social messages. For Cuevas, his drawings represent the isolation of man and an inability to communicate, many of his drawings featuring distorted human figures and figures transformed into animals. His work was inspired by the graphic styles of Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, and José Guadalupe Posada...
