About the Item

Richard Florsheim created this color lithograph entitled “Carnival” in 1972 in an edition of 30 pieces. Published by Associated American Artists and printed by Landfall Press, this impression is signed and inscribed “16/30.” It is in good condition with full original color. The printed image size is 10 x 31.82 inches and the paper size is 12 x 34 inches. Richard Florsheim was born on October 25, 1916, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the University of Chicago (1935-36) and studied in New York with Aaron Bohrod (1934–35). Florsheim continued his studies in Europe between the years (1936-38) exhibiting his work in France at the Salon des Refusés, and the Musée du Jeu de Paume, before returning to Chicago in 1939. He began working in lithography in 1940 and was included in a two-man show at Quest Gallery, Chicago. Florsheim was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy during World War II and served in a map-making detail. Following his time of service, he gained national attention for his somber interpretations of the devastation he had witnessed during the war. Florsheim established himself in New York and his paintings became widely recognized. ACA, his major gallery, considered him to be their star. In the 1950s and 1960s, as a printmaker, he sold more graphics than any other artist represented by the AAA (Associated American Artists) Gallery. As a mature artist, Florsheim’s paintings and graphics were concerned with refracted light in landscapes, scenes of industry and night-time cities. Among his best-known images are views of the Chicago skyline at night and the bright yellow and orange flames from steel mills seen against dark backgrounds. The lyrical works reflecting his summer stays in Provincetown were also concerned with the refraction and distortion of light. Those works showed sailboats, marshes, and surf set against elegant clouds and reflections on the sea. Florsheim’s work is in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago; the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH; Detroit Institute of Arts; Kunsthalle Hamburg, Germany; La Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France; the Library of Congress, Washington, D. C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museo d’Art Moderna, Milan, Italy; Museum de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Syracuse University, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; and Yale University, New Haven, CT; among others.

Interiors IV : Hotel Paradise Cafe
By Peter Milton
Located in New York, NY
“INTERIORS IV : HOTEL PARADISE” Contemporary artist Peter Milton created this etching and engraving in 1987. The printed Image size is 24 x 35.50 inches and the paper size is 30.75 x 41.75 inches. This impression is signed, dated, and titled in pencil, and inscribed “84/175” – the 84th impression of an edition of 175 pieces. “I do love to draw. I feel that I am being granted membership in the Brotherhood of Merlin, conjuring forth some apparition. As a drawing develops, I sense a vague presence coming more and more into focus, something in a white fog emerging and becoming increasingly palpable.” – P. Milton, “The primacy of touch. The Drawings of Peter Milton” “Working in layers, Milton begins with drawings based on people and places, with nods to Western art history and culture. He is a master of the appropriated image, a term that may conjure Andy Warhol and his Pop Art comrades. But Milton steps further back in history, avoiding the Pop sense of cool advertising and popular culture references. Instead, a broader cultural past is tapped through historical photographs of key players, architecture, and locales, which he reinvents by hand. He adds content drawn from his life as an avid reader – always with multiple possible interpretations – thus incorporating deeper meaning in his cinematic worlds. Elements of Greek mythology, classical music, art history, and history coalesce in his images, which embrace the messiness, sorrow, and elation that is life. One is hard-pressed to imagine a more erudite, skilled, passionate, and cheeky soul.” – T. L. Johnson and A. Shafer Peter Milton was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. He studied for two years at the Virginia Military Institute...
