Associated with the Minimalist art movement of the 1960s, Mangold developed a reductive vocabulary based on geometric forms, monochromatic color, and an emphasis on the flatness of the painted picture plane. Within this seemingly austere repertoire, his work has evolved over time to a heightened complexity and lyricism through the use of innovatively shaped asymmetric and multiple-panel canvases, curvilinear lines that connect and unify geometric shapes, and ineffable and surprising color combinations. Printmaking, which Mangold began professionally in 1968, was a natural fit for an artist drawn to working in series and experimenting with variations on a theme. Prints became, in fact, an area where Mangold often first developed visual ideas that later appeared in his paintings, and he has to date completed over two hundred print editions, many in serial portfolios.
Mangold’s work is held in numerous public collections including Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH; Brooklyn Museum, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington. D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Tate, London; among many others worldwide.

Robert Mangold
Robert Mangold (born October 12, 1937) is an American minimalist artist. “Robert Mangold’s paintings,” wrote Michael Kimmelman in the New York Times in 1997, “are more complicated to describe than they seem, which is partly what’s good about them: the way they invite intense scrutiny, which, in the nature of good art, is its own reward.” His works are comprised often of simple elements which are put together through complex means. Mangold's work challenges the typical connotations of what a painting is or could be, and his works often appear as objects rather than images. Elements refer often to architectural elements or have the feeling of an architect's hands. He almost always works in extensive series, often carried through both paintings and works on paper.

By Leon Polk Smith
Located in New York, NY
Leon Polk Smith (1906 -1996) holds a unique place in a long tradition of American geometric abstract painting. Born near Chikasha, a Native American territory later annexed by the U.S. as the state of Oklahoma, Smith’s parents, who were of Cherokee ancestry, raised him with both a strong sense of his heritage and an abiding respect for the land.
Art would eventually draw Smith to New York where he would quickly embrace elements of geometric abstraction in his work. Many of Smith’s hard-edge compositions could be viewed as distillations of imagery drawn from the Oklahoma landscape...

The Pequod Meets the Jeroboam: Her Story from the Moby Dick Deckle Edges Series
By Frank Stella
Located in Long Island City, NY
Two whaling ships meet out at sea, one named after an Indigenous American tribe and the other after the first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel, the latter set upon by a malignant epidemic and a sailor gone mad with the belief that he is the Archangel Gabriel. Both ships are plagued, one by sickness and the other by obsession, and neither heeds the warnings of the mad prophet. Built out in layers of paper that have been printed using techniques like lithography and etching, this colossal print by Frank Stella employs careful color against warping black and white grids to give the impression of control slowly slipping and giving way to chaos. Photos don't give this piece proper justice; it is carefully collaged in purposeful layers that constantly pull the eye in every direction and the viewer closer and closer in.
