Syrian artist Sami Burhan(b.1929) is noted for his pioneering use of calligraphy in non-objective art alongside seminal painters such as Nasser Chaura and Mahmoud Hammad, who co-founded the Letterism school in 1964. Apprentice of Husein Husni, the first calligrapher at the court of the Istanbul sultan The Letterism group first galvanized artists to explore the potential of pre-modern forms, namely Arabic calligraphy, as the bases for abstraction.
Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1929, Sami Burhan began studying Arabic calligraphy at age thirteen. In the years since, he has held more than fifty solo exhibitions throughout the Arab world, Europe, and the United States. Burhan attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris after which he obtained a degree in painting and sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He also holds a degree from the Institute of Coin and Medal Design. In addition to his art, Burhan has worked in arts education at the Teachers’ Training College of Aleppo in Syria, and has taught the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy at the Institute of Islamic Studies in Rome. His works are housed in various institutions and private collections, including the National Museum of Damascus and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. He won the first prize in a group exhibition organized by the city of Aleppo on the occasion of visiting expatriates in Syria in 1949 - 1954 AD he held the first personal exhibition in Aleppo (Al-Saad Club), then he traveled to Naples, Genoa, Milan, Paris, and there he began free study at the High School of Fine Arts, Academy of Julian Krend Schumper-Ranson, and studied faience in a professional to be aware of the great professor of Orientalism and Islam ( Louis Massignon). 1963 First prize (San Vito Romano) won over a hundred foreign artists. - 1964, he participated in the Biennial Exhibition in Venice. - 1965 AD, obtained a BA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. -1977 AD participated in the exhibition of foreign artists in Rome (Palace of Exhibitions) - 1993 AD was awarded the title of pioneer of Arab art on the occasion of the first Biennial in the United Arab Emirates. 1995 founded the Arab Italian Center in Masakrara 1992 - 1999. Participated in many group exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia, and held hundreds of solo exhibitions in Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, the United States, Lebanon and Syria. It was chosen by the United Nations to place a logo for the anti-drug campaign, and this design was a slogan for the Conference of Interior Ministers in the world, and the Arab Center for Security Studies made a carpet measuring 3/3 for this logo and it is now in the main hall of the United Nations headquarters in Vienna.
