There is a quiet simplicity in this modern abstract monoprint by artist Sheila Crider. Though consisting of entirely neutral tones, the work has an energetic spirit that shines through. Though completely abstract, the inclusion of a repeated polygon overlay in two differing tones creates a sense of depth, and the curved nature of the bottom of the work is almost reminiscent of a house or steeple atop a grassy hill. One straight line that has been hatched through, and one organically fluid line in a deeper yellowy brown break the composition vertically through its center.
The title of the series, BRHHP, stands for Between Rocks and a Hard Heart Place.
Artist Commentary:
Fin de series. This is one of the remaining prints from a series of 60 monotypes executed at Lily Press with masterprinter Susan Goldman in 2012. They are based on a visit to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and road markings on the island of Saba in the Caribbean. We made the principle cimtrex plate putting a piece of slate through the press to mimic the road and the crumbling wall of the prison.
About the Artist:
My art career started with creative writing, researching and experimenting with the idea that abstract art has a knowable and communicable vocabulary. Now I make objects based on materials and process then create installations around social and/or aesthetic ideas manifesting an integration of image, object and frame into pictures or settings that read as something familiar. Philosophically and socially, I work to strengthen the artist’ relationship with the public at large and to challenge how and where “art” is defined.
