Sol Lewitt, Geometric Abstraction Louis Vuitton 100% Silk Scarf, Limited Ed. 250

ca. 1987

About the Item

Sol LeWitt Limited Edition Geometric Abstraction Silk Scarf, ca. 1987 Limited Edition Silkscreen on 100% Italian silk scarf/shawl Signed on the fabric with artist's printed signature lower right and printed Louis Vuitton brand name and Louis Vuitton 100% silk fabric. Edition of 250 36 × 35 inches Unframed In December 2019, the famous color company Pantone declared the color of the year for 2020 is "Classic Blue". Well, back in the mid 1980s, Sol Lewitt was way ahead of his time with this beautiful classic blue textile created for Louis Vuitton - the perfect gift for 2020 !! Another edition of this work was featured prominently in a major show at the Louis Vuitton exhibition space in Beverly Hills "Louis Vuitton, Artistic Collaborations" - and traveling worldwide, celebrating the designers most iconic and historic collaborations with famous artists. This very rare, desirable limited edition vintage, 100% Italian silk scarf was designed by the internationally renowned artist Sol LeWitt for Louis Vuitton in the late 1980s. It is unnumbered, but presumed to have been created in an edition of approximately 250 - but these scarves are so rare, and rarely to market, there are thought to be fewer out there, as it took us more than a decade to find this one! Louis Vuitton’s interest in the arts began in the 1980s when the legendary Paris-based fashion house commissioned important contemporary painters like César, Sol LeWitt, James Rosenquist, Sandro Chia and Olivier Debré to create exclusive scarf designs. Demonstrating the influence of art on artisanship, these collaborations became a tradition and reached a new level when Marc Jacobs joined the fashion house in 1997. Launched in the late 1980s, the “Textile Series” is an ongoing project where renowned artists, designers and architects are invited to express themselves through the medium of fabric. Later on, Louis Vuitton would famously collaborate with art superstars like Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince and Yayoi Kusama; but early works, like this Sol Lewitt, were done in far more limited editions. Literature: Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion and Architecture (Rizzoli, 2009) This work makes a memorable gift. Very good vintage condition; with original folds as issued. There are few small thread pulls (see close up photos of snags); otherwise fine.
