About the Item

5 Colour lithograph on Somerset Satin Tub Sized White 410gsm. 60 x 76 cm (23.6 x 29.9 in) Signed, dated and numbered by the artist Edition of 125 ‘Peace Be Still’ (2022) showcases Stanley Whitney’s trademark bold colours, horizontal bands, multi-hued blocks, and all-over fields of gestural marks. His stacks of colour are at once expansive, bold, rhythmic and monumental. Whitney’s vibrant abstract paintings unlock the linear structure of the grid, filling it with new and unexpected accents of colour, rhythm, and space. Deriving inspiration from sources as diverse as Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, and American quilt-making, Whitney composes with blocks and bars that articulate a chromatic call-and-response in each canvas. He has spent many years experimenting with the seemingly limitless potential of a single compositional method, loosely dividing square canvases into multiple registers. Stanley Whitney is an esteemed American abstract painter whose work is celebrated for its vibrant colors, geometric compositions, and rhythmic brushwork. Born in Philadelphia in 1946, Whitney's artistic journey spans over five decades, during which he has developed a distinctive visual language characterized by the interplay of form and color. Inspired by the traditions of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, Whitney's paintings often feature stacked and interlocking blocks of color that create dynamic and harmonious arrangements on the canvas. His use of color is particularly notable, with bold and contrasting hues infusing his works with a sense of energy and vitality. Whitney's art is deeply rooted in his personal experiences and cultural influences, drawing from his African American heritage and travels to places such as Egypt and Italy. Through his abstract compositions, Whitney explores themes of balance, harmony, and the human experience, inviting viewers to engage with his work on both a visual and emotional level. With numerous exhibitions and accolades to his name, including a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, Whitney continues to captivate audiences with his vibrant and compelling paintings.
