About the Item

Terry Maker makes three-dimensional works that get to the “guts” of the materials used, such as discarded shoes, vinyl records, candy dust and shredded documents. They have been deconstructed and then reconstructed, echoing her own inner journey as an artist. An intentional, though often surprising, interplay of chaos and order is evident in the finished artwork. She says, “I explore the process of art making while addressing themes relating to human desire and decay, death and resurrection, mundane and sacred and mark-making–both literal and figurative. The revealed surfaces present the viewer with a visual puzzle, made even stranger by its unique visual vocabulary, that opens the possibility of new connections, and new perspectives.” In recent years Maker has experimented with translating her three-dimensional explorations into two-dimensional images, creating new works by starting with rubbings of the 3-D works onto Japanese paper. It was a natural step in the evolution of her art when she enthusiastically accepted the offer to collaborate with Bud Shark on a print inspired by one of those pieces.

Color lithograph with cut outs, Ed. 25 “My work has often been described as belonging to a category of ‘reductive, geometric abstraction’. In the last decade however, I have been intentionally, slowly reshaping what constitutes my working model to incorporate more surprise and imaginative play. While my work remains what some would call ‘abstract’, image and representation have become more apparent. The two lithographs produced with Shark’s Ink...

Artist Comments
Artist Terri Bell creates abstract incorporation of low-key colors punctuated through a grid of dark grey and black. A series of squares and spheres connect and form dynamic textural structures. An intricate and bold geometric balance takes form. The composition retains a certain harmony despite the random nature of the application.

About the Artist
Artist Terri Bell constructs highly detailed geometric fields that dance to life with engaging colors and soft edges. As a young child, Terri always wanted to paint, draw, or play imaginative games. She entered college as an art major and received important mentorship from several teachers. Unfortunately, it was at this point that Terri’s art career was put on hold. "I had to make a couple of detours along the way, and ended up changing my major to political science," she says, "which led me to work in a high stress, high profile state government position." Terri’s creative pursuits were more limited but ever-present. "Art was the balance in my life and I never gave up my dream." Through hard work and determination, she has returned to her calling as a full-time career artist. When she’s not painting, Terri enjoys cooking, container gardening, and spending time with her husband and two Yorkies.
