About the Item

Terry Winters (b. 1949) is internationally known for his paintings and drawings that explore the expanded field of abstraction through complex layers of patterns, and symbols derived from mathematical formulas repeated in nature. Winters translates systems of information in his artwork. Considering neural connections, brain functions, cyberspace, and computers, he attempts to demonstrate the connections that—while not visible—are intrinsic to humanity's worldly experiences. Creating artworks that are process-driven, Winters speaks to the connection between technology and the human mind. His images align with the Modernist tradition of physicality and non-narrative abstraction. Printmaking has long held special interest for Winters. This edition depicts a kaleidoscopic system, patterned with organic elements and a pleasant combination of red, blue, and pink hues. An intricate web of lines and forms pulses across the surface, suggesting diagrams, biological patterns, or a coded network in flux. The composition oscillates between precision and fluidity: shapes appear to drift, cluster, and dissolve, evoking cellular structures, botanical networks, or fragments of coded data. Winters’ layered marks generate a sense of spatial ambiguity—forms recede and advance, at once schematic and organic—so that the print feels both diagrammatic and atmospheric. The result is an image that suggests not only the mapping of hidden systems but also the pulse and rhythm of living matter itself. Terry Winters has work in the public collections of several major institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Saatchi Collection, London, UK; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; among others. Shung Kang
By Harold Town
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monotype - which he called "Single Autographic Prints" Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen...

Cornucopia
By General Idea
Located in Toronto, Ontario
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They use photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues such as the cult of the artist, mass media, queer identity, and consumerism. Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles. This print comes from "Fear Management": a set of 8 prints...

Complementaries
Located in Llanbrynmair, GB
’Complementaries’ By Yutaka Takayanagi. Medium - Relief and lithographic print Edition - 19/20 Signed - Yes Size - 615mm x 780mm Date - 1976 Condition - Good. 9 out of 10. Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year. During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers. Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums. In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist. Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks. Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints. Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...
