Vaclav Vytlacil
Untitled

1937

About the Item

Vaclav Vytlacil, an eminent American artist and educator, played a pivotal role in popularizing Hans Hofmann's teachings in the United States. Renowned alongside modernist giants like Picasso and Matisse, he earned acclaim from critics, notably Howard Devree of the New York Times. Vytlacil's artistic legacy endures in prestigious collections, including The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. His influence extended to notable students like sculptor Dorothy Rieber Joralemon, and his teachings thrive through Frank O'Cain, who continues imparting Vytlacil's theoretical principles at the Art Students League of New York. This 1937 lithograph demonstrates Vytlacil’s immersion in the composition theories of Hofmann as well as his exposure to ideas from Cubism and his early explorations that would help construct the foundations for abstract expressionism in New York City.
