Marisol Escobar

About the Item

Marisol Escobar, otherwise known simply as Marisol, was a Venezuelan-American sculptor born in Paris, who lived and worked in New York City. She became world-famous in the mid-1960s, but lapsed into relative obscurity within a decade. Escobar’s work explored gender roles and their limitations and exposed the patriarchal governance of the arts in the western world, usually with sculpture. Those works ranged from the suggestive and provocative to the satirical, and even acerbic mimicry. She was professionally associated with Andy Warhol and appeared in two of his films. This 1973 etching suggests issues related to motherhood, relationships, and sexuality. Its swerve away from any linear narrative in favor of a compounded narrative suggests her exposure to surrealism and dadaism and even folk art and cubism.
