Gambier has collaborated with an accomplished, New York-based printmaker to adapt four "Apertures" paintings in black, orange, yellow and turquoise to a discrete, limited-edition of 20. ARTIST BIO: Born in the south of France, Véronique Gambier started to paint on large scale canvases at the age of 12 under the guidance of French Master Pierre Pallut, developing a strong sense of color and abstraction. She attended L’école des Beaux Arts de Toulon (College of Fine Art of Toulon) and L’école des Beaux Art de Luminy (Luminy College of Fine Art) in Marseille. Beginning at the age of 17, she participated in several group shows in the south of France. Always drawn towards texture as well as color, Véronique chose to pursue a career in fashion which lead her to Paris, London and then New York. After working in fashion, then as a Graphic Designer, Gambier decided to devote her time to painting. Today Gambier is committed on a full-time basis to her artwork and exhibits in group shows in the New York area. Gambier’s creative process is to capture the contradistinctive values of the media she uses. She seeks to express tension rather than harmony, movement rather than stillness. “For me, balancing light and dark is the pure essence of imagery.”. Gambier lives and works between Brooklyn and Ghent, New York. ARTIST STATEMENT: Through saturated color, geometric compositions, and fluid gestures, my monochromatic imagery explores concepts of openness, the unknown, and undefined space. I am searching to represent the contradictions and oppositions that can exist within single beings. My intention is to merge the contradistinctive values of my themes and materials. I want to suggest intimate but forward movement—a limitless movement in time and space. I am looking for the unrevealed. I create my paintings using highly diluted acrylic, ink and watercolor on paper. The surface becomes part of the medium as I integrate the white of the background as an element equal to the paint. This process forces me to trust and follow the path presented to me. During the painting and drying process, I lay the surface horizontally to avoid the effects of gravity that come into play when using water-based media on a vertical surface. The Apertures series—my largest body of work—aims to capture single, yet multi-faceted moments as they unfold. With these paintings I attempt to define space and express infinity simultaneously. My entire body, arm, hand and brush flow in a continuous motion to produce a direct mark.
