About the Item

It takes a certain confidence and mastery of color to work in such dark, dense hues. Yves Gaucher (1934-2000) is one of Quebec's most important and influential printmakers and painters. He is renowned for his ultra-minimal, at times austere, asymmetrical compositions of dense color. Like Harold Town, Gaucher first established his reputation as a printmaker in the late 1950s. Gaucher is credited with reviving and promoting the art of printmaking in Quebec in the 1950s and 60s. Teaching at Concordia University, Gaucher taught many accomplished artists and influenced their forays into printmaking: Betty Goodwin is a notable student from the 1960's. This later work is a paradigm of the use of heavy shapes and imposing color. Depending on the time of day, the dense dark colors can read slate green, eggplant, deep brown, or charcoal. As for the forms, they recall some of Frank Stella's "Irregular Polygons" from the late 1960s - where two shapes confront each other ambiguously.
