About the Item

Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. Rendered and printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, one of the foremost ateliers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor and champion of modernism, believed deeply in the synthesis of art and literature, creating a publication that served as both a scholarly platform and a collectors object. Across its many issues, XXe Siecle featured original lithographs, pochoirs, linocuts, and wood engravings by leading modern masters including Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miro, Braque, Leger, Kandinsky, and Calder, printed by premier ateliers such as Mourlot, Atelier Jacomet, and Lacouriere. The double issues of the 1950s reflect a flourishing period of postwar abstraction, sculpture, and avant garde experimentation. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential reference point in 20th century art history, prized by collectors, museums, and scholars worldwide. About the Artist: Zoran Music (1909–2005) was a Slovenian born Italian modernist painter and printmaker whose poetic restraint, tonal mastery, and profound humanism placed him among the most compelling and enduring European artists of the 20th century, standing in thoughtful dialogue with trailblazing figures such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray; celebrated for his searing Dachau drawings, ethereal Dalmatian landscapes, contemplative Venetian scenes, and his iconic We Are Not the Last series, Music forged a visual language rooted in silence, memory, and existential reflection, shaped by the trauma of World War II and the luminous atmospheres of Italy and the Adriatic coast, with early exposure to Austrian and Central European Expressionism including the influence of Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and the brooding humanism of Georges Rouault blending seamlessly with the distilled clarity of Giorgio Morandi, the metaphysical sensibility of de Chirico, and the postwar austerity of Giacometti to form a unique vocabulary of muted tones, skeletal forms, and sparsely rendered spaces that radiate both fragility and transcendence; in Paris and Venice he moved among leading intellectual and artistic circles, absorbing the innovations of abstraction, existentialism, and European modernism while maintaining a fiercely personal approach marked by introspection and restraint, inspiring later artists such as Marlene Dumas, Anselm Kiefer, Luc Tuymans, Michael Borremans, and others who explore themes of memory, trauma, and the metaphysical presence of the human figure; Musics works have been featured in major exhibitions at institutions such as the Musee dArt Moderne de Paris, Tate, Kunstmuseum Basel, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Neue Galerie, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and multiple editions of the Venice Biennale, cementing his position as a central figure in postwar European art, and his current auction record was set when St. Marks Square, Venice sold for 1,104,000 USD at Christies New York on November 6, 2013. Zoran Music, Sans titre, XXe Siecle 1959, lithograph and pochoir printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet.
