Further Background: Basquiat’s “Portrait of A-One A.K.A. King” was originally created in 1982 during the seminal year of Basquiat's meteoric rise to fame. The work depicts fellow legendary New York graffiti artist A-One, ‘crowned’ & standing before a wall covered in tags. Anthony “A-One” Clarke (American, 1964–2001) was a legendary New York Graffiti artist. He first started painting at the age of six, and began tagging subway cars in the mid-1970s. Although he studied architecture, he continued to refine his style throughout his career both on the street and through his work on canvas. A-One was a member of the “Tag Master Killers,” a group of artists which included Rammellzee, Toxic, Delta 2, and Kool Koor. Legendary New York graffiti artist, Toxic (Torrick Ablack b.1965): met Basquiat at the Annina Nosei Gallery in 1982. The two were similar in the sense of family background and general interests. In 1982, before mentioned Rammellzee, Basquiat, and Toxic traveled to Los Angeles and dubbed themselves the Hollywood Africans as a social and political comment of African Americans stereotypes in the entertainment industry. Originally executed by Basquiat in 1984, “Gold Griot” parodies western fantasies of Africa through a grinning face derived from an African mask. The work was originally set on golden painted planks of wood as a means of illuminating a specific presence of the Griot within African tradition. Related Categories Pop Art. Street Art.
