About the Item

A vibrant, three-angle portrait printed from woodblock and linocut plates on hand-made Okawara paper. Signed and numbered by the artist. Internationally recognized painter and printmaker Alex Katz was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, New York. Over a thirty-year period he has produced an outstanding body of work including large-scale portrait paintings, woodcuts, etchings and linocuts. Using smooth, glossy planes of color to create representational images, Katz's work has immediate connections to reality and to the artificial. His portraiture is characterized by flatly rendered, dramatically cropped, oversize heads that recall movies, advertising and billboards - giving the traditional genre to posed portraits an expansive, contemporary look. Katz’s work has been the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions internationally, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Baltimore Museum of Art; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Sara Hildén Art Museum, Tampere, Finland; National Portrait Gallery, London; Albertina, Vienna; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Serpentine Galleries, London; Tate Liverpool; Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris; and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. In 2022, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presented a career retrospective in New York.
