About the Item

André Brasilier, an exceptional figure in contemporary art, shares with Picasso the rare privilege of having enjoyed a retrospective exhibition at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in 2005 during his lifetime, testifying to the international recognition of his work. This original lithograph expresses a latent dreaminess, where reality fades away in favor of reverie, a stripping away of expression that, far from detracting from its scope, magnifies its essence and evocative power. The artist's wife and muse, Chantal, is one of his favorite subjects. She is often portrayed delicately arranging flowers. At the heart of the image, it's her again, Chantal like a poetic icône, with this beautiful red flower resting on her shoulder like she's holding it in her hands like a precious object. She may be contemplating her reflection. The classic composition confronts us with its soft, minimalist graphics, sublimating elegance through less rather than more. Two rectangular shapes in a light gray appear as the only background. An economy of line emerges, with forms unfolding with simplicity. The painting's strength lies in its chromatic rigor: the contrast between the vibrant red of the flower and the abyssal black of the hair, eyes, and dress creates a polysemy of sensations and emotions. Brasilier has achieved an indescribable balance between reality and dream, between representation and its magical perception. André Brasilier is a French painter, born in 1929 in Saumur, France, who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris. In 1952, he received the Florence Blumenthal Award and the Prix de Rome for painting the following year. He resided at the Villa Medicis in Rome from 1954 to 1957. He currently lives and works in Paris. Blending abstraction and expressionism, André Brasilier's lyrical, dreamlike paintings explore an intimate communion with nature. Brasilier had his first retrospective of one hundred artworks from 1950-1980 at the Château de Chenonceau in 1980 and a retrospective exhibition at the Musée Picasso-Château Grimaldi in Antibes, the French Riviera, in 1988. He has since been honored with significant retrospectives at Russia's renowned State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg in 2005 and at the Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen Saarlois in Germany in 2007.
