Dog - Etching by Antonio Tempesta - 1610s
Located in Roma, IT
Dog is a wonderful black and white etching on thick laid paper, realized by the Italian master Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630).
Not signed.
In good conditions.
Including a cream-colored cardboard passepartout, 34 x 50 cm.
An exciting original print, with all the dignity of a mythological or epic story, represented with an incredible balance of black and white, light and shadow, and a typical Baroque dynamism.
Antonio Tempesta, also known as Il Tempestino (Florence, 1555 - Rome, 1630), was an Italian painter and engraver of the early Baroque period. Antonio Tempesta trained in the culture of late Mannerism, with a naturalistic but also calligraphic taste, acquired from the frequentation of Giovanni Stradano, with whom he collaborated in the decoration of Palazzo Vecchio.
Moving to Rome in 1573, he worked for Pope Gregory XIII, frescoing some maps of Rome in the Vatican, including the famous Map of Rome (1593). In the pontifical capital, he worked for many noble families and for important cardinals, such as Alessandro Farnese and Scipione Borghese. His works are in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, at the villa in Caprarola, in Tivoli.
He returned to Florence for a brief stay, where he collaborated with Alessandro Allori...

"Coyote Scratching His Fleas..." - Woodblock Print
By Daniel Stolpe
Located in Soquel, CA
Vibrant print of a coyote by Daniel Stolpe (American, 1939-2018). Titled, numbered ("Presentation Proof"), signed and dated along bottom edge. Presented in a black frame with a double mat. Sheet on verso with information about the piece, stating that only 5 Presentation Proofs were created, making this piece 1 of 5. Paper size: 24"H x 28"W.
(2018) Master artist and Native Images lithographer Dan "Coyote" Stolpe slipped out of his non-functioning body, and is running free at last and howling in the hills. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dan's father introduced him to Native American teachers of Art and Culture through the Woodcraft Rangers, who influenced Dan for the rest of his life. "Everything was patterned after a tribal structure," Stolpe said. We learned about Indian life and lore and we had Indian guys teach us how to make Indian costumes and about Indian dance and drums. That's what got me interested."
Dan made his first drum when he was 14, and he was quietly playing that same drum during his final days of life.
Stolpe attended LA Co. Art Institute (OTIS) on scholarship until 1962, when he dropped out to Apprentice with artist Don La Viere Turner in Glendora, and then with Master Printer Joe Funk in Venice until 1966. Commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute, he moved to Washington DC to illustrate extinct birds...

1830's Hand-colored Lithograph of a Ground Squirrel
Located in Soquel, CA
Wonderfully preserved hand-colored 1830's lithograph "Ground Squirrel" by Thomas Doughty (American, 1793 - 1856), circa 1830. From "The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports." Phila: J.&T. Doughty, 1830-32. Sold previously by Bland Gallery, Early 20th century East Side gallery specializing in miniatures. Presented in frame with new acid-free mat under plexiglass. Image size: 7.25"H x 8.75"W.
Doughty’s short-lived magazine “The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports” is an important imprint in the history of American printing. It contained the first colored sporting prints made in America. Issued in monthly parts and published from the end of 1830 until the spring of 1834, “The Cabinet” featured articles on hunting, detailed descriptions of newly discovered flora and fauna, and some of the finest examples of early American hand-colored lithography. It was originally the work of the Doughty brothers, Thomas and John, with virtually all of the plates being the work of Thomas, who also founded the Hudson River School. But, by the spring of 1832, the partnership had broken up and Thomas had moved to Boston. An abbreviated third volume lacked Thomas’ touch.
Printed by Childs & Inman, the partnership between Philadelphia engraver and lithographer Cephas G. Childs and New York portrait...
