About the Item

David Everett was born in Beaumont, Texas, and received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from The University of Texas in Austin. In 1978, Everett was awarded a Faculty Travel Grant from Southwestern University in Georgetown to pursue a series of drawings in Italy. In 1989, his work became the first commissioned sculpture to be published by Neiman Marcus on the cover of its Christmas catalog. Valley House first showed his first multi-articulated, painted wood sculptures in 1986. Although Everett is best known for his wood sculptures, he also creates relief panels, bronze sculptures, and 2-dimensional drawings and woodcuts. His most significant influence stems directly from his earliest memories with his brother; they had a mutual affinity for the forests, swamps, bayous, marsh covered plains and bays that are the landscape of Southeast Texas. From this vantage point Everett began a life-long process of restating his observations into a visual art that explores what is, in his words, a paradoxical and allegorical interplay of both human and animal forms, celebrating the natural history of a personal world. His work often involves a totem-like grouping of animals that, contextually, become layered with meaning in their discussion of the fragile constructs within our universe. In addition to Everett's remarkable career as a visual artist, he is an accomplished musician; he played lead guitar in an East Texas Garage band called Six Deep whose 1967 single “Girl, It's Over” is now a collectors’ item. He approaches his sculptural forms accordingly, explaining that “My interest is not only in animals but the abstraction of the animal form...dealing with rhythms and intervals, colors and patterns, working a composition... not unlike music.” This color woodcut is an edition of 20. The paper size is 13 x 15 inches.

"Coyote Scratching His Fleas..." - Woodblock Print
By Daniel Stolpe
Located in Soquel, CA
Vibrant print of a coyote by Daniel Stolpe (American, 1939-2018). Titled, numbered ("Presentation Proof"), signed and dated along bottom edge. Presented in a black frame with a double mat. Sheet on verso with information about the piece, stating that only 5 Presentation Proofs were created, making this piece 1 of 5. Paper size: 24"H x 28"W. (2018) Master artist and Native Images lithographer Dan "Coyote" Stolpe slipped out of his non-functioning body, and is running free at last and howling in the hills. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dan's father introduced him to Native American teachers of Art and Culture through the Woodcraft Rangers, who influenced Dan for the rest of his life. "Everything was patterned after a tribal structure," Stolpe said. We learned about Indian life and lore and we had Indian guys teach us how to make Indian costumes and about Indian dance and drums. That's what got me interested." Dan made his first drum when he was 14, and he was quietly playing that same drum during his final days of life. Stolpe attended LA Co. Art Institute (OTIS) on scholarship until 1962, when he dropped out to Apprentice with artist Don La Viere Turner in Glendora, and then with Master Printer Joe Funk in Venice until 1966. Commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute, he moved to Washington DC to illustrate extinct birds...
