About the Item

This original etching and aquatint is hand signed in pencil by the artist "David Hockney" at the lower right margin. It is dated in pencil “74” [1974] next to the signature. It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100, at the lower left margin. There were also 23 artist’s proofs aside from the standard edition of 100. This work was printed by Atelier Crommelynck, Paris in 1974 and was published by Petersburg Press, London and New York in 1978. Note: Another impression of this subject is held in the collection of The National Gallery of Art, Washington. The upper sheet edge with a soft fold across the margin, far from the image. Very pale, unobtrusive mount staining at the sheet edges.

Comes from Audubon's monumental book volume "The Birds of America", (Havell Edition, 1827-1838), which consists of 435 hand-colored, life-size prints, made from engraved plates, with each sheet originally measuring around 39" x 26". The would be "J. Whatman 1835" watermark is likely missing due to its trimming. The composition was probably painted in England in 1835, using a preserved specimen.
