About the Item

Hand-colored etching on laid paper by George Edwards (1694-1773) from A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and of some other Rare and Undescribed Animals, Quadrapeds, Reptiles, Fishes, Insects, etc. published London, 1743-64. Though now considered one work totaling 362 plates, it was originally published as two volumes with "A Natural History..." published 1743-1751, followed by thes second volume "Gleaning of Natural History" published 1758-1764. The majority of the plates - 318 of them - depict birds, leaving the remaining 44 plates to illustrate various animals, fish, and insect. Edwards was a British draughtsman, naturalist, and one of the most prominent ornithologists of his day, known as the “Father of British Ornithology”. Edwards etched his own plates and hand colored several copies before directing others in the coloring. A Natural History… was considered one of the most comprehensive of all English 18th century natural history works and is credited with popularizing the art of bird and animal illustration. Plate inscription, in reverse: George Edwards August the 4th 1748.
