About the Item

This plate is unique because of the bird species' unmistakable beauty and the great scientific and artistic skill with which Elisabeth and Jhon Gould rendered it. The price quoted highlights the brilliance of the colors, the excellent state of conservation, and the fact that the print is coeval. We also point out that we have placed other prints from the same series on the platform; hanging the collection as a whole would be one of the most elegant, striking and spectacular decorative walls ever imagined. The pair of artists and scientists embarked on an adventurous journey; imagine the difficulty of the time even today. Moreover, with this suite, Elisabeth and Jhon Gould, both watercolourists and ornithologists, show incredible foresight and intelligence in choosing which subjects to shoot. The plate belongs to the spectacular and fascinating collection The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, consisting of 320 hand-painted lithographic works. This work was published in twenty-five parts; Gould died after the release of the twentieth, and the work was followed by Dr Bowdler Sharp, who also completed The Birds of Asia. William Hart, Gould's frequent collaborator on other collections, executed most of the lithographs.\

John Gould (1804–1881) is the most prolific publisher of ornithological subjects of all time. In 19th-century Europe, his name was as well known as Audubon’s was in North America. Unlike Audubon, whose life’s work focused on one region, Gould traveled widely and employed other artists to help create his lavish, hand-colored lithographic folios. John Gould’s love of natural history was fostered in the gardens of King George III where his father was chief gardener at Windsor Castle. Although trained as a gardener, Gould’s interests quickly evolved, and at the age of 20, he was appointed taxidermist to the Zoological Society of London. After three years, he progressed to the position of curator of birds and chief taxidermist. In 1830, newly married, Gould and his artist wife, Elizabeth Gould...
