"Strepsilas Interpres." John Gould Turnstone lithograph c.1850 by John Gould (England, 1804-1881). Print by J. Gould & H.C. Richter, hand colored lithograph of naturalistic Turnstones in their coastal environment. Plate from the following Gould volume: "The Birds of Australia (1840-69)". Titled "Strepsilas Interpres." lower middle. "J. Gould and H.C. Richter del et lith" lower left. "Walter, Imp." lower right. Original text description on verso, has multiple tears and age toning. Presented in an off-white mat and simple metal frame. Image size: 12" H X 16" L. John Gould (1841-1881) was the most prolific artist and publisher of ornithological subjects of all time. In nineteenth century Europe his name was as well known as Audubon's was in North America. Unlike Audubon, whose life's work focused on one region whose life's work focused on one region, Gould traveled widely and employed other artists to help create his lavish hand-colored lithographic folios. Nearly 3,000 lithographs were created during the span of his long career.

    Muskateer 28th Foot (Gloucestershire Regiment) 1746 in Watercolor on Paper A beautiful watercolor of a British Musketeer of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, in full uniform standing with poise and readiness by English artist Clarence F. Bretherick (b. 1868). Signed lower right. Displayed in a rustic giltwood frame. Image, 12"H x 9"W. In 1892 Bretherick was appointed permanently on the Liverpool Weekly Post as artist to that journal, to be responsible for all illustrations therein. His great specialty was figure drawing, military figure subjects in particular.
