José Bedia, "Armed Animal / Mother of War" (Diptych), 2019
This diptych by José Bedia stands as a powerful allegory of protection and resilience. In Armed Animal, the central figure does not embody offensive violence but rather an ancestral force of defense: a totemic, hybrid being, poised to guard what is sacred. It is a guardian spirit channeling energies that transcend the human, evoking an instinct to shield rather than to strike.
Below, Mother of War is not the source of conflict, but a symbol of feminine strength—the source of courage, wisdom, and spiritual resolve. It functions as a symbolic womb, nurturing the power to defend, to stand firm in the face of threat.
Bedia, with his deeply symbolic visual language, draws from Afro-Cuban, Indigenous American, and personal spiritual traditions. His signs and symbols echo ancient scripts and protective rituals, inviting the viewer into a contemplative space of recognition and connection.
This work does not glorify war; rather, it honors the sacred right—and urgent need—to defend what matters: our roots, our people, our inner truth. It is a call to protect, born not of aggression, but of love and spiritual conviction.
José Bedia Biography
José Braulio Bedia Valdés was born on January 13, 1959, in Havana, Cuba. He is considered one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Cuban art and a leading voice of the so-called “New Cuban Art” movement of the 1980s, which marked a turning point in the island’s visual arts and a new approach to art’s social role in Cuba.
Bedia began his studies at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts and was among the first graduates of Havana’s newly founded Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), where he earned his degree with honors. In 1980, he participated in the groundbreaking exhibition “Volumen I,” which reshaped the Cuban art scene.
His work is characterized by a neo-primitivist figurative style that blends cross-cultural references. Deeply influenced by spirituality, Bedia was initiated into the Palo Monte religious tradition and has long been drawn to indigenous cultures of Latin America, Africa, and North America. Through painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, he explores the worldviews of cultures marginalized by the West.
In 1990, he represented Cuba at the Venice Biennale. That same year, he left Cuba, settling first in Mexico and later, in 1993, in the U.S. He currently lives in Miami. In 1993, he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship. His work is part of major collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano in Spain, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
