About the Item

KAWS Snoopy Print 2020: This rare, highly collectible KAWS Snoopy print was released on the occasion of the monumental 2021 KAWS Brooklyn Museum exhibition, KAWS: WHAT PARTY. Hand-signed and numbered from an edition of 20. Medium: Screen-print on paper. Dimensions: 9x10 inches. Excellent overall condition; never displayed. Hand-signed on the lower right and numbered from an edition of 20 (lower left). Provenance: The Brooklyn Museum. KAWS Snoopy: further background: Since 1995, KAWS has incorporated Snoopy into every aspect of his artistic practice. He began by graffiti tagging Peanuts characters on a MetLife billboard in New Jersey. Later, he released vinyl toys of Snoopy and Woodstock, debuted limited edition prints of the pup at Art Basel in Miami Beach, and partnered with Uniqlo to design a collection of Peanuts clothing. KAWS’s fascination with Snoopy began at a young age. “I think Peanuts is part of being a kid in America,” the artist has said about Charles Schutz’s endearing comic strip. KAWS’s career began as a graffiti artist in New York, NY, in the early 1990s. His images were seen on billboards, bus stops, and in phone booths. Immediately after graduation in 1996 from SVA, KAWS began working as a freelance artist for Disney. Some of his most popular works include his contributions to 101 Dalmations, Daria, and Doug. Once KAWS began to rise in popularity, his graffiti advertisements became highly sought after. He traveled extensively to work in Paris, London, Germany, and Japan. In 1998, he received the Pernod Liquid Art Award, which offers a grant to new artists. In late 1990s, KAWS began to design and produce limited-edition toys. These gained international popularity, especially in Japan. He also began to collaborate on several different toys, including with Nigo (Japanese, b.1970) for A Bathing Ape. Since, KAWS has embraced the commercialist spirit of Claes Oldenburg and Takashi Murakami, designing everything from Kanye West album covers to Nike sneakers. Avoiding the distinction between products and art objects, KAWS has shown his work increasingly in galleries and museums over the past decade; some of his most famous images are re-imagined versions of pop characters like Mickey Mouse and the Michelin Man.
