About the Item

Mr. C (Cat) Linocut, 1984 Signed in pencil (see photo) Edition: 250 (209/250) (see photo) Published by Associated American Artists, New York, NY Reference: AAA/Czestochowski 1984.009 Condition: Mint Image size: 7 1/2 x 6 inches "Kyohei Inukai was the third son born to Kyohei Inukai the Elder and Lucene Goodenow. Their marriage in 1910 was quite the scandal at the time, as a Chicago socialite did not marry a Japanese man. The union of these two Chicago Art Institute students produced three sons, all became artists. Kyohei Inukai attended The Chicago Art Institute following in his parents footsteps. He also attended the National Academy of Design NY, and the Art Student League NY. His ability was apparent as early as eight years old, and soon developed a mastery in illustration, painting, printing, etching, woodcuts, sculpture, writing and inventing over the course of his life. Inukai lived in New York, but traveled extensively throughout Europe which is apparent in his impressionistic oils and watercolors of towns and landscapes. He was fascinated by the intricate nature of construction painted mostly in dark colors, and also the vibrant reds, oranges and blues of his simple and complex geometric paintings and silk screens, both very large and miniature. Inukai's art is pleasing and compelling, attractive to, and appreciated by a wide variety of those who love art. Cats! He loved cats and in addition to paintings, woodcuts, and etchings of cats, they can be found showing up here and there in his paintings of other subjects. Kyohei's writing included poems, haiku, book, and screenplays. He wrote and illustrated ten children's books which have been reprinted and are available on Amazon under his aka name Earle Goodenow. In 1946 Earle (Kyohei) also designed and illustrated a now valuable edition of the Arabian Nights published by Grosset and Dunlap. Kyohei passed away in 1985 a relatively unknown artist with a vast amount of his art in the genres in which he was proficient. He was a brilliant, gentle man who was averse to promoting himself. " Courtesy of the Artist "Kyohei Inukai (1886-1954) was a Japanese-American artist who painted portraits and watercolors during the early part of the twentieth century. Biography [edit] Inuaki was born in Okayama, Japan in 1886. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 14, and trained as an artist at the Art Institute of Chicago. He married Lucene Goodenow and had three sons with her, including a son named Eugene Goodenow (better known as Kyohei Inukai). He moved to New York City in 1915 where he maintained a successful career as an artist. One of his specialties was portraiture; he painted portraits of various members of New York's business elite, including Madison Grant and Thomas J. Watson, Sr. At some point by the 1930s, he divorced his wife and married Olivia Kirkland, an opera singer, as his second wife. The two had a fourth son together. He later had a long-running affair with Dorothy Hampton, who modeled for him even after other clients had abandoned him. In 1925, his self-portrait was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.[2] Currently the portrait is in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Inukai received the Maynard Prize in 1926 from the National Academy of Design. While Inukai was reasonably successful in his day, World War II ruined his reputation and sent him into obscurity, as few Americans wished to continue patronizing a Japanese artist after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. There have since been attempts to rehabilitate him, though. A later notable exhibitions was a 2014 show at the museum at Amherst which paired Inukai's work with portraiture by Robert Brackman.] Much of Inukai's work and his scrapbook are owned by Miyoko and John Davey, a married couple of art collectors. The two have sought to raise Inukai's profile and reputation, and published a monograph containing Inukai's writings and work in 2014. " Courtesy Wikipedia
