Artist: John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851) Title: "Greenshank (St. Augustine, FL)" (Plate 346, No. 70) Portfolio: The Birds of America, First Royal Octavo Edition Year: 1840-1844 Medium: Original Hand-Colored Lithograph on wove paper Limited edition: approx. 1,200 Printer: John T. Bowen, Philadelphia, PA Publisher: John James Audubon and J.B. Chevalier, New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA Sheet size: 6.5" x 10.25" Image size: 4.38" x 7.75" Condition: Minor toning at edges. In excellent condition with strong colors Rare Notes: Lithography and hand-coloring by American artist John T. Bowen (1801-c.1856). Comes from Audubon's famous seven volume portfolio "The Birds of America", First Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844), which consists of 500 hand-colored lithographs. Comes with its original accompanying text pages. The composition was probably painted in England in 1835, using a preserved specimen. Since no other than Audubon has ever claimed to have seen this European species in America, it is considered possible that he confused it with the greater yellow-legs. The common greenshank is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae, the typical waders. The genus name Tringa is the New Latin name given to the green sandpiper by Aldrovandus in 1599 based on Ancient Greek trungas, a thrush-sized, white-rumped, tail-bobbing wading...

When you research all the major museums that have a copy of this poster, it is usually in bad shape with missing paper. This original c. 1917 has no missing paper and is bright and vibrant. It should be in the finest condition original available. Explore The United States Army Air Service was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1918 and 1926 1. It was established as an independent but temporary branch of the U.S. War Department during World War I by two executive orders of President Woodrow Wilson: on May 24, 1918, replacing the Aviation Section, Signal Corps as the nation’s Air Force, and March 19, 1919, establishing a military Director of Air Service to control all aviation activities. Its life was extended for another year in July 1919, during which time Congress passed the legislation necessary to make it a permanent establishment. The National Defense Act of 1920 assigned the Air Service the status of “combatant arm of the line” of the United States Army with a major general in command. Charles Livingston Bull (1874-1932) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations of wildlife. Bull studied taxidermy in Rochester, New York, and his first job at the age of 16 was preparing animals for mounting at the Ward’s Museum in Rochester, New York. During World War I, he designed recruiting posters, including the famous Join the Army Air Service poster...
