In 1858 the British Ornithologists' Union (BOU) was formed. It was the first organization, devoted solely to the study of birds. One year later, members of the BOU founded a (Quarterly) "Magazine of General Ornithology," entitled "The Ibis". In the preface of the first issue of The Ibis the editor, Philip Lutley Sclater, recalls that in a meeting in the autumn of 1857 a group of ornithologists who would soon establish the British Ornithologists' Union, there was a "strong feeling that it would be advisable to establish a Magazine devoted solely to Ornithology." A year later, in what was called "the annual assemblage" of November 1858, it was determined, after due consideration, "by those present that a Quarterly Magazine of General Ornithology should be established, that a limited subscription should be entered into to provide a fund for that purpose, and that the subscribers should form an 'Ornithological Union'.
"The Ibis" is not only the oldest British, current magazine devoted to Ornithology, but it is the premier publication of its kind in the English language; indeed it may be truthfully said that it is now, and long has been, the most practical and the best-edited ornithological periodical in any language. To its columns for over 60 years, the flower of British ornithologists have contributed of their best, while the editors though few in number have been counted among the most distinguished naturalists of their day.
Biography:
Philip Lutley Sclater FRS FRGS FZS FLS (4 November 1829 - 27 June 1913) was an English lawyer and zoologist. In zoology, he was an expert ornithologist, and identified the main zoogeographic regions of the world. Sclater was the founder and first editor of "The Ibis", the journal of the British Ornithologists' Union. He was Secretary of the Zoological Society of London for 42 years, from 1860 to 1902.

Lithography and hand-coloring by American artist John T. Bowen (1801-c.1856). Comes from Audubon's famous seven volume portfolio "The Birds of America", First Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844), which consists of 500 hand-colored lithographs.

The Canada warbler is a small boreal songbird of the New World warbler family. It summers in Canada and northeastern United States and winters in northern South America.
To make 'The Birds of America' more affordable and widely available, in 1839 John James Audubon began the first octavo edition, a smaller version of the folio which was printed and hand-colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. Employing a new invention, the camera lucida, the images were reduced in size, rendered in intermediate drawings by John James Audubon and his son John Woodhouse, and then drawn onto lithographic stones. These miniatures exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail, as well as a meticulous fidelity to the larger works.
