The United States Army Air Service was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1918 and 1926 1. It was established as an independent but temporary branch of the U.S. War Department during World War I by two executive orders of President Woodrow Wilson: on May 24, 1918, replacing the Aviation Section, Signal Corps as the nation’s Air Force, and March 19, 1919, establishing a military Director of Air Service to control all aviation activities. Its life was extended for another year in July 1919, during which time Congress passed the legislation necessary to make it a permanent establishment. The National Defense Act of 1920 assigned the Air Service the status of “combatant arm of the line” of the United States Army with a major general in command.
Charles Livingston Bull (1874-1932) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations of wildlife. Bull studied taxidermy in Rochester, New York, and his first job at the age of 16 was preparing animals for mounting at the Ward’s Museum in Rochester, New York. The Munich 1972 Olympic Posters, a complete collection of 30 works
Located in London, GB
The extremely rare, complete collection of 28 artists original graphics, the first signed edition before the second poster edition of 4000, with varying edition numbers including Artist’s Proofs, from the total edition of 200, each hand signed and numbered or inscribed, 1969 - 1972, printed on varying papers, published by the Organising Committee for the Games of the XXth Olympiad and F. Bruckmann, Germany, with 2 additional screenprints of the Emblem by Victor Vasarely, 1972, signed from the edition of 200, on wove paper, each sheet, various measurements. (30 works)
The 1972 Olympic Committee commissioned 28 international artists to each produce an original print for the Munich Games that year. The artists were given unprecedented freedom to explore their personal perspectives of the Olympic spirit using their own unique styles and methods. Departing from the traditional subject matter and style of past Olympic prints, the artists produced works which ranged from abstraction to realism, and from collage to op-art.
The Committee specifically commissioned world-renowned artists to produce this series in order to destigmatise the idea that fine art should be reserved for private enjoyment. Instead, these posters demonstrated that art can exist comfortably in the public sphere, serving both as art and advertisement and echoing the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin...
