About the Item

Lithograph from Carlos Schwabe’s series of hand-colored Symbolist fantasy illustrations for Catulle Mendès’ Hésperus, published in 1904 by Société de propagation des livres d'art, Paris. This work comes from the extremely scarce edition on Imperial Japon paper, a mulberry bark-based stock inspired by the smooth-surfaced papers used in Japanese printmaking. This artwork is presented in an archival rag mat and arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Carlos Schwabe was one of the most prominent Symbolist artists during the Golden Age of the Bibliophile, a period beginning just before the 20th century during which lavish volumes of books including Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers of Evil) were produced. No expense was spared in their creation; it was common for publishers to produce multiple separate editions and sizes for one title, including extremely rare editions with hand-colored aquarelle elements on Imperial Japon paper. Schwabe created illustrations for several books during this period, including Catulle Mendès’ Hésperus, Émile Zola's Le rêve, and Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. Notable museum collections featuring works by Carlos Schwabe include: Musée d'Orsay, Paris; Louvre Museum Database, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Art Institute of Chicago; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.

Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater: "Hallowed Be Thy Name" 1899 sepia lithograph
By Alphonse Mucha
Located in Chicago, IL
Stone lithograph sepia plate of Hallowed Be Thy Name from Alphonse Mucha’s masterpiece of mysticism, Le Pater. Printed by F. Champenois, published by Henri Piazza in Paris in an edition of 510, 1899. “Le Pater is the perfect convergence of three important movements at the close of the 19th century: Art Nouveau, Mysticism, and Religion. Art Nouveau, through its respect and honor of Nature, promotes the idea of a spirit of energy coursing through all things–a tenet of Mysticism–that finds foundation in the traditions of Mucha's personal relationship with the imagery of Religion. Le Pater gave Mucha a venue to communicate his beliefs specifically through his unique approach to Art and the coded language he had been learning through his devotion to Masonic teachings. He combined the aesthetics of Medieval manuscripts...
